Lighting / Lumens Calculator

Light level is lux; a room's need is its area times the target lux for what happens there. Divide by your bulb's lumens and you have the count.

How it works

Typical targets: living and bedrooms ~150 lux, kitchens and offices ~300, workshops and detail tasks ~500. Total lumens = area x lux; an 800 lm bulb is roughly the old 60 W incandescent.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens for a living room?

Around 150 lux: a 20 m2 living room wants about 3,000 lm total - four 800 lm bulbs, ideally layered between ceiling, floor and table lamps.

Are lumens the same as watts?

No - watts measure consumption, lumens output. LEDs deliver roughly 80-100 lm per watt, so a 10 W LED replaces the old 75 W bulb.
