How it works

Studs = ceiling(length / centres) + 1. Timber = studs x height + 2 x length for the plates, plus 10%. Use 400 mm centres where plasterboard is heavy or the wall carries load; 600 mm suits standard partitions.

Frequently asked questions

400 or 600 mm stud centres?

600 mm suits standard 12.5 mm boarded partitions; 400 mm stiffens walls for tiling, heavy fixtures, or 9.5 mm board. Both match board widths (1200 mm).

What timber for stud walls?

CLS 38 x 63 or 38 x 89 is the norm. A 4 m partition at 2.4 m high on 600 centres: 8 studs plus plates - about 29 m of timber.
