Perimeter minus the doorways, plus the mitre wastage corners always claim - then divide into stock lengths.

How it works
Net run = perimeter - door openings. Add 5-10% for mitred corners and bad cuts, then divide by the stock length (3 m or 2.4 m) and round up. Buy long where possible - fewer joints.
Frequently asked questions
How much skirting for a 4 x 3 m room?
Perimeter 14 m minus a 0.9 m doorway is 13.1 m; with 10% wastage, order 14.5 m - five 3 m lengths.
Why so much wastage on skirting?
Every external corner is two 45-degree mitres, and each mitre re-cut costs length. Rooms with chimney breasts and alcoves multiply the corners.
